It starts with curiousity…
Rae started her career in digital media as an academic, obsessed with fandoms and their unique means of digital communication. After completing her Master’s in Linguistics at the University of Georgia, she took her research into practical application, leading music fan communities at Atlantic Records. At AOL she was on the team that founded and managed the brand’s original social channels across multiple verticals, continuing that work after the Huffington Post merger.
She followed that up with a dual career path, using her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism to write for Billboard and Out Magazine about budding fandoms and pop culture, while continuing her social media career at VH1. At the Daily Dot, she originated the publication’s coverage of digital influencers at a pivotal time in the industry, building deep relationships and treating online talent on par with Hollywood celebrities.
Most recently, she spent almost 9 years at Netflix, starting in the documentary social media space. In a quest to build a deep community there, she developed Netflix’s first podcast, and an entire division was born. As the first Head of Podcasts, she led a team of creatives developing and producing over 50 audio-first projects, branching out into video podcast production and social podcast promotion to support Netflix shows, films, and brand initiatives. Her work touched various disciplines, including production management, cross-functional strategic planning, deal making and talent relations, on-the-ground capture, promotion and media placement, and analytics. Supporting titles like The Crown, Stranger Things, and projects like Netflix is a Joke, she drove substantial increases in listenership and brand awareness during her tenure, with growth year-over-year.
In her spare time, Rae runs a boutique travel consulting business specializing in theme park vacations. She also writes a weekly newsletter called Ask The Group Chat, answering reader questions about everything you think you’re supposed to know as an adult. She’s the parent of a boisterous 4-year-old and a frequent world traveler.
