What’s interesting about the film to me is, while Carson says, ” I know what it’s like to be an outed, outsider.” That’s about as far as the film goes regarding his sexuality. It’s not about his struggle to come to terms with his sexuality and his sexuality has nothing to do with the reason why he struggles in school. It’s about a teenager who has problems like any other teenager so, the fact that his sexuality is never an issue is really something I’ve never seen before. It’s kind of unheard of.

Glee Recap - Tragedy at McKinley High - Billboard.com

I sat with the suicide scene from Glee since last Friday, since I needed to view it to prep for my interview with Max Adler. It was extremely hard to watch, and then watch again, especially without the rest of the episode to see, but I’m glad I did. Sitting with that moment for a while let it sink in, and let me think about how truly masterfully done it is, in comparison to there rest of the episode and, really, all episodes of Glee, as a piece of storytelling. When Glee gets it right, it helps erase all the failings and wrongs of the series, and takes Glee beyond just a TV show, but a social force. That’s why I opened my recap this week with names of young boys who weren’t as lucky as a fictional character and didn’t get a second chance.

The things I want to think about Glee as it finishes out the season are still all about destiny and the future, about how much control you have (Rachel and Kurt, to create their success through ambition, and the flipside where you can also attempt your own demise, which various characters have done in their own ways but Karofsky most starkly) and the alternate when life strips your control (Quinn, Blaine and Kurt in their past, Sam by circumstance of his age in this case, although we’ve seen TV magic erase parts of that stress) and how you react to that loss of control. It’s a fluid thing (Kurt couldn’t stop Karofsky’s violence, but he could react to it in different ways, etc.) and the most interesting thing to me about how Glee is setting us up for the great escape from high school. I sit and think about little changes I could have made to my destiny then, and what they would have meant for now. It’s hard to see in such small focus, because it feels like I was always meant to be where I am now. But was I?

Rae Votta: You had a powerful scene with Chris Colfer (Kurt) in this episode, and you've had a lot of them throughout the series. How was working with Chris on this one in comparison to others you've done?
Max Adler: I would work with Chris every day for the rest of my life. He's just a natural, genuine person. There's something when you're looking in his eyes in a scene and everything in life kind of goes away. You can completely surrender to the characters, the circumstance and the situation. We just get that about each other, there's something about our scenes where we live in the world of all the subtext and what's really being said in between the lines. I think that's what people have responded to, and it's so appreciated. Also the writers have done such a great job fleshing out these characters, and people can relate to them because they know somebody like one of these characters. Chris gives 100 percent, even when it's my closeup and there's no camera on him he'll be shedding tears, which obviously helps my performance. We both have respect and love for our craft and the message we're portraying. I think when he visits me in the hospital is one of the most powerful scene that we've shot, because Kurt realizes that Karofksy needs a friend. He's dangling off a cliff by a thread, and he needs someone on the other end to show him that it's going to be okay and that there's a future where people will love him for who he is. Kurt is the only one to step up for him to do that. It's one of the first times you see us on the same page as opposed to at war with each other.

I talked to Max Adler from Glee about this week’s emotional episode — everything from his preparation as an actor, his thoughts on Glee’s song selection of “Cough Syrup,” and what this scene with Chris Colfer was like in comparison to all their other intense scenes over the series.

My favorite part:

Interesting parallel between the Gorilla suit removal last episode and the dressing of himself in the suit in preparation for his suicide in this one.

I’m glad you got that. I feel like in that scene, in the suicide, Karofsky has been unable to control any elements of his life, the way people see him he hasn’t been able to dictate. If he wanted to show any sensitivity it would be a weakness, so he’s constantly masking who he is. Him putting the suit on is finally his way to control something, make his own image and be seen has how he wants to be seen. It’s interesting that in his last moments is the only time he is able to control his decisions and his life.

What if they ARE doing a number on a rollercoaster but plot-twist a la Final Destination and the rollercoaster crashes and everyone dies except them and then death starts chasing them until all of them die and that’s why the last 6 episodes are heart-breaking

final destination: nationals.

I would watch the shit out of that.

And the “revolutionary” twist for next season is that their ghosts in the school are the S2 reboot of American Horror Story?

All I keep saying is Glee/American Horror Story crossover is the only way for this thing to end.
